The Satisfaction and the Need of Assistive Devices for the Elderly

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the satisfaction and the need of assistive devices in everyday life of the elderly.

Methods: The survey has been conducted 111 subjects over 65 years old that live in northern Yeongdong area of Gangwon-do. The questionnaire consisted of 42 items selected in ADL/IADL areas of Occupational Therapy Framework: Domain and Process (AOTA, 2002) and we investigate whether they have used assistive devices, satisfied and needed assistive devices.

Results: 80.2% of the subjects used assistive devices and 66.7% of an assistive devices user was satisfied. But 78.4% of them need another assistive devices in addition to current assistive devices. The most used assistive devices for ADL was denture(39.6%) followed by magnifier(36.0%), back supports(16.2%), and cane(14.4%). For IAD, sphygmomanometer was 6.3%. The most needed assistive devices were sphygmomanometer(24.3%) for health management and maintenance. Safety grip and magnifier(18.9%), non-slip mat, silver car, back supports, and toe-nail scissors with magnifier(17.1%) in daily life were needed.

Conclusion: We conclude that the most of the elderly over 65 years old have used or are using assistive devices, but they need another assistive devices for safety, health management, personal device for poor physical condition and mobility.
